When fan passions get turned onto food, what we usually end up with is sugar-filled creations that are wildly inspiring and awesome to look at, but not exactly healthy. They're tasty treats meant for those special moments, rather than nibbles we can chow down on any day.
But not anymore! Did you hear that
Evil Mad Scientist has has created a melon Death Star? Not only does it not have that huge exhaust port flaw, but it's something you can make yourself in 5 minutes. Unfortunately, I can't tell you exactly how -- the Evil Mad Scientist is a bit sneaky about his design. All we know: it takes one cantaloupe, a knife, and five minutes, and there's a few extra hints to get you started.
Just make sure that you eat it the right way when you do dig in. It would be a shame to slice it when it should end up
looking like this.

Last month,
Cinematical was lucky enough to join a few other select outlets on a trip to London for something called The James Bond Experience. One of the cooler activities we took part in (aside from
driving an Aston Martin at 150mph and
chatting with both Daniel Craig and Marc Forster) was our field trip to the Imperial War Museum London where, to celebrate Ian Fleming's 100th birthday, they're currently housing an exhibit dedicated to the man called
For Your Eyes Only.
If you're a James Bond fan or an Ian Fleming fan or both, then I seriously recommend boarding a plane to London in order to check out this exhibit because you'll see so much -- some of which is on display for the very first time. I'm talking a slew of original manuscripts (from
Casino Royale to
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), props from some of your favorite James Bond films, personal letters, photographs, notes -- essentially Fleming's entire life right there before your eyes.
While there's no photography allowed inside the exhibit,
Cinematical managed to snag a bunch of photos showing only a fraction of what's on display across the pond. So, instead of writing a thousand words describing what I saw, I present these two packed galleries full of images from the Imperial War Museum and the
For Your Eyes Only exhibit. Show, don't tell ... right?

Not too long ago we featured a group of Steampunk Star Wars figures created by
Sillof's Workshop. Well, yesterday
Cinematical reader Jeff pointed out that Sillof had
finished a Return of the Jedi line of figures, and, well, as you can see they're pretty damn cool. Above you'll find figures for Jabba the Hutt, slave Princess Leia, Salacious Crumb and Bib Fortuna. (Is it just me, or does this Jabba look straight out of a Guillermo del Toro flick?) Other characters in this set include an Ewok (who kinda looks like a smaller Wookiee -- which is funny since, originally, the forest full of Ewoks was supposed to be full of Wookiees), the Emperor, Imperial guards, Admiral Ackbar and a pimped-out Luke Skywalker. Check out a few images, along with other Steampunk Star Wars figures and drawings, in the gallery below.

So who watched the season premiere of
South Park last night? I tell you, just when you think those boys are starting to get a bit weak in their old age, you're shown a scene featuring Steven Spielberg and George Lucas physically raping Indiana Jones as the poor man cries out for help. Oh yeah ... and did we mention
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull comes out on DVD this Tuesday? Yup ... and it's, er,
loaded with extras!
Obviously this was their way of saying the latest Indiana Jones film sorta raped their childhood, but count me among those who kinda enjoyed watching the flick. (And I'm not alone -- here's Jeffrey's
passionate post in defense of the sequel.) Sure, I could do without a few scenes here and there, but overall it wasn't terrible. What do you think? Did
South Park cross a line last night?

(All this month we'll be bringing back some of our favorite Halloween-themed posts, as well as digging up some brand new stuff from beyond the grave. Enjoy!) By: Matt BradshawSince the 1980s was a time of truly horrifying fashions and some downright scary hairdos (pass the Aquanet, please) it's no surprise that it was also a boom period for horror films. Some of the biggest horror franchises in history came into their own then, and the decade was marked by the emergence of home video, the greatest thing ever to happen to horror. I'm presenting these in no particular order, but these are all flicks I found time to enjoy between solving my Rubik's Cube and admiring girls in leg-warmers (I keep hoping those will come back).
The Return of the Living Dead (1985)Despite what ultimately ended up on screen, this project began its undead life as a more or less official sequel to the movie that gave birth to the modern zombie genre. After completion of
Night of the Living Dead, director
George Romero and co-screenwriter
John Russo both held sequel rights. While Romero continued the series with 1978's
Dawn of the Dead, Russo's sequel came in the form of a potboiler of a novel called
Return of the Living Dead. The book is a real chore to plod through, but apparently writer/director
Dan O'Bannon liked it enough to turn it into a film which fortunately bears no resemblance to Russo's novel. In the film, the events of
Night of the Living Dead are more or less based on a true occurrence, but names and details were changed to avoid law suits. Several drums of the chemical manufactured by the military to reanimate the dead were mistakenly shipped to Uneeda Medical Supply. A dopey pair of guys release the chemical which makes its way into some cadavers in the warehouse and eventually the cemetery across the street, where a gang of punk rockers are killing time. These zombies are more selective than most, feasting only on brains. Not everything works perfectly, but the zombie known as Tarman is pretty cool,
Linnea Quigley is naked most of the time and there's an awesome punk soundtrack.

Those interested in picking up
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull when it hits DVD on October 14th might want to pay attention to this post because there are several different options available to you. For example, above you can see an image of what's being offered at Best Buy -- a gift set with replica crystal skull from Sideshow Collectibles and a $25 gift card to Sideshowcollectibles.com. Pretty cool for you cats who'd have no problem staring at that freak-ish alien skull for all eternity.
Okay, the alien skull is a bit much -- I get it -- but, like I said, you have options. Case in point:
- Circuit City is handing out 2 lithographs of concept art from the movie.
- Target is fooling around with a very sweet looking 80-page hardcover book with behind the scenes photos and never-been-published images.
- Kmart and Sears will give you four exclusive LEGO mini-posters, each being a replica of the original theatrical poster from all four Indy films.
- Lastly, Trans World is offering exclusive steelbook packaging.

There's actually a lot of noteworthy geek news today -- but alas, none of it is amazing enough to really warrant an entire post. Believe me, it makes me a sad panda not getting to devote an entire post to Wolverine. So, let's just get right down to it:
- Producer Lauren Shuler Donner talked up X-Men Origins: Wolverine over on Superhero Hype: "It's closer to the first X-Men in tone because it's a little darker, but there's a lot of action. It's his origin story. It's really good. I've been in the editing room the last couple of weeks and I think that it's good and that audiences are going to like it. But it's a little darker ... You haven't seen this side of him. It's darker and sadder and it's kick-ass. There's a ton of action. It's really kick-ass." She also suggested the film borrows from Wolverine's Victorian youth in one of my least favorite series, Wolverine: Origins.
- The troubled Punisher: War Zone has launched its official site, and it's got all kinds of things to click on. The multiplayer game jammed up my computer so I don't know what that's all about. And IGN has the new poster, which will arrive in your local theaters framed in "real" guns. I must say, that is a pretty impressive piece of marketing.
- David S. Goyer, scribe of The Dark Knight, tried his best to end all these Batman 3 rumors. "It's all B.S.," he told MTV News. "ALL of it. Chris and I haven't even talked about it. He quite understandably is taking a long, long vacation and wants to purge himself." This will dampen the "Guess who's playing Catwoman" rumors for approximately 3.5 days.
- Superhero Hype has 5 videos of Kick-Ass filming in Toronto. Mostly people standing around, and cars being driven on platform trucks. And /film has photos up of Dave "Kick Ass" Lizewski's costume, filled out nicely by his stunt double.

I'll be the first to bash
Paris Hilton on any given day of the week, but I must admit these fake presidential videos starring Hilton have brought us one or three actual laughs. In her latest video, just posted over at
Funny or Die (watch it after the jump), Paris Hilton is joined by one of our greatest fake presidents,
Martin Sheen, as the two discuss what it takes to become the nation's next fake president. Both take on such issues as the economy, foreign policy (which Hilton calls FoPo) and Iraq. Toward the end even
Charlie Sheen makes an appearance, but then bails to take in a jacuzzi. While I'm not so keen on the word 'president' being associated with Hilton in any way, shape or form, part of me wouldn't mind watching her host a debate. The girl has a larger fanbase than either candidate, and I'm sure she'll choose questions that keep them on their toes. "Prada or Gucci ... and why? Senator Obama, we'll start with you." What say you?

Middle Earth fanatics have long debated what the heck this whole "second
Hobbit movie" would entail. Arguably, there's enough material for a
prequel, with Gandalf leading battles into Mirkwood to fight Sauron, who was slowly rebuilding his dark kingdom. But recent news has suggested it is more of a
Hobbit sequel, where Tolkien's material is scarcer.
Well,
MTV News caught up with director
Guillermo del Toro, who attempted to shed a little light on the topic. "The reality is that we stopped talking the first movie and second movie, and we just started taking about the movie - the two episodes, or two parts, as if they were a single piece of narrative. We don't even call it the bridge movie, we just call it 'The Movie.' And this is great. When we found what reverberated, and we found it in one of our virtual meetings -- we understood. It's a movie. We all agree that if we do our job right, it should all feel like a continuous journey. That's what we're striving for."
Is that any clearer? No, I didn't think so. But actually, del Toro dropped one hint, one riddle in the dark that might just solve everything -- he let slip where the first movie would end. "We are finding out. I think Smaug dies in the first movie. So draw your own conclusions."
And
my conclusion would be that with Smaug's death concluding the first movie, the second would deal with the Battle of the Five Armies, where everyone from elves to the men of Esgaroth have an eye on claiming Smaug's gold. It's pretty epic and vicious, and could
easily take up an entire movie. In fact, I'm not sure how they could get all of that into one
Hobbit film. I think this is going to turn out to be a sensible move that does the book justice -- not the cash grab we all took it for.

While I'm sure we'll all agree that these past few years have given us some wonderful little comedic gems, it's often unfortunate to see most of the attention thrown at one particular sex, or, in some cases, one particular man: Judd Apatow. But this post won't be about Judd Apatow, or Seth Rogen ,or Jonah Hill, or Michael Cera, or Will Ferrell, or Adam McKay, or Vince Vaughn, or Owen Wilson, or Kevin Smith ... or any of the male names that currently populate (and dominate) some of your favorite comedies. Nope, because it's about damn time we give the ladies some respect.
I'm sick of the female roles in comedies today. She's either the bland girlfriend, or the bland friend, or the bland enemy -- she's full of cliches, and only serves two purposes: 1) to help move the story along, and 2) to make her male counterpart appear funnier. That said, Hollywood is beginning to take more chances on the female-driven comedy, with films like
Baby Mama, The House Bunny, Sex and the City, Bride Wars and
Confessions of a Shopaholic all arriving in theaters this year or in early 2009. But is this enough? Is there better, smarter and funnier material for women out there, somewhere ... over the rainbow? While you ponder that, here, in my opinion, are the funniest ladies of 2008 (in no particular order) ...
1. Tina FeyRight now you know her as "that woman who does the awesome Sarah Palin impersonation," but people forget Fey has been making us laugh for a good while now. One of
three four women on this list who began their career on
Saturday Night Live, Fey brings hilarity from multiple directions. Whether she's producing, writing or starring, anything with her name on it is guaranteed to bring in more than a few laughs ... and then some. (See:

Cinematical have been championing ever since the flick blew us away back at the Slamdance Film Festival earlier this year. Never have I experienced so many different emotions while watching a film, and when I left that tiny theater in Utah following the premiere, I vowed to spread this inspired piece of filmmaking as far and wide as I could. We praise and champion a lot of small films here at
Cinematical (and hopefully turn you folks on to some great finds), but if I had to throw myself out there for one film this year, it would have to be
Dear Zachary.
Since it's better to know as little as possible going into this particular doc, I've posted the synopsis after the jump (for those who want more details).
Dear Zachary arrives in theaters on October 31st in New York and on November 7th in Los Angeles and Chicago, before expanding to other cities. Additionally, you'll be able to catch the entire doc when it airs on MSNBC this December 7th.

Cinematical has just received this exclusive clip from the period drama
The Duchess (click image above or head after the jump to view), directed by Saul Dibb and based on Amanda Foreman's best-selling novel. Starring
Keira Knightley as Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire, the film chronicles the life of a vibrant beauty and celebrity of her time; a woman held prisoner in an unhappy marriage, but one who'd risk it all for the love of a young politician. (Been there, done that -- right ladies?) Also starring Ralph Fiennes, Charlotte Rampling, Dominic Cooper and Hayley Atwell, the following clip takes us inside a pretty intense confrontation between Georgiana and the Duke of Devonshire (Fiennes) as they battle one another for the respect each feels they deserve.
The Duchess (which is currently enjoying a limited release) expands to theaters across the country on October 10.

Right off the bat, let me admit this: I never saw all of
Transformers. I knew it wasn't my cup of tea, and when I caught about ten minutes at the DVD store recently, I was convinced I made the right decision. (God, that dialog made me laugh.) That being said, I think I
might have been swayed if BBQ fiends had a hand in the film.
As
Serious Eats has shared, the right porcine transformer above was part of the
American Royal Barbecue Contest, which recently smoked up lots of meat and had some clever
competitors from Massachusetts. I never realized before how perfectly a pig would fit into the Transformer mold until now. Instead of Optimus Prime, maybe it'd be Optimus Prime Rib? Rawhide rather than Ironhide?
Okay, so maybe a meat-themed
Transformers movie would be a little weird, but that logo still rules.
